How Late Can You File a 1099 Form 2018?

The deadline for 1099 form 2018 has come and gone, but employers can still file this with the IRS. While this form’s due date was January 31, 2019, business owners can technically file these forms at any time. However, the IRS has up to three years to levy penalties against late or incorrect filings. If you still haven’t filed the 1099 form for 2018, and you haven’t been fined by the IRS, you should do so as soon as possible.

Advanced Micro Solutions provides an easy, user-friendly way to file all types of tax and wage forms, including every type of 1099. Our 1099/W-2 Filer centralizes all income filing, while our add-on tools can help users with other aspects of business accounting. Whether you need to file a late 2018 or are looking for ways to prevent late or incorrect filings, AMS has a solution.

What is the Timeline for 1099 Form 2018 Filing?

The deadlines imposed on 1099 forms have not changed much in recent years. In most cases, the form for the previous year is due January 31 of the following year. So, for the 2018 1099 form, the January 31, 2019 was the official deadline. However, filers should note that this is the deadline only if the 1099-MISC has an amount in Box 7. The form filing date for all other types of 1099s, including 1099-MISC forms without a Box 7 figure, is the last day of February. For the 2018 1099 form, that was February 28, 2019

In the years since 2018 filings, the IRS has streamlined this process. Now, there is a specific 1099 form, called 1099-NEC, for Box 7 figures, or “non-employment compensation.” This will hopefully make deadlines a bit clearer for employers. However, if you are filing your 1099 form 2018 now, well after the initial deadline, these due dates don’t apply. They are merely something to keep in mind as moving forward.
