This year, the first 1099 filing deadline falls on a Friday. Unlike in years past, when January 31st falls on a weekend, businesses will not have the extra day or two to send 1099 forms to their recipients. You won’t have the extra time you might have gotten used to in years past, which means you’ll want to remain diligent in your accounting and tax preparation. Use the 1099 filing deadline as an excuse to start the weekend off on the right foot rather than requesting extensions and prolonging the process.
From there, the filing deadline for most paper format filing is typically the last day of February. This year, the last day of the month, February 29th, falls on a Saturday, which means most paper format filing will instead be due Friday, February 28.
If you’re filing electronically, you have another month’s leeway. The deadline is Wednesday, March 31st. You can find a full list and explanation of each employer-based 1099 filing deadline on the IRS site.
