The 1099-PATR form is used by cooperatives. Also known as the Taxable Distributions Received from Cooperatives form, this version of the 1099 addresses and reports patronage dividends, nonpatronage distributions, and per-unit retain allocations.
Only cooperative entities must file Form 1099-PATR. According to the IRS, they must do this for each person to whom they paid at least $10 in patronage dividends and other distributions (described in section 6044(b). They must also do this for any person from whom they withheld federal income tax under the backup withholding rules regardless of the amount of payment. Put simply, if you are an accountant for or work in human resources at a cooperative company, you’ll likely need to acquaint yourself with Form 1099-PATR.
There are a few exemptions for Form 1099-PATR filing. In general, you are not required to file Form 1099-PATR for payments made to a corporation, a tax-exempt organization (including tax-exempt trusts), the United States, a state, a possession, or the District of Columbia.
1099-PATR Software Solution that Works
While the 1099-PATR may look simple, it requires a lot of important data acquired over the span of the year. Our W-2 and 1099 Software tool includes every type of 1099 you might need. Users can enter information through a spreadsheet format or a screen that resembles the form itself, import data from a number of common file types, and easily print and generate a range of forms. This is the best solution for 1099-PATR filing.
Changes to Form 1099-PATR
If you have filed a 1099-PATR form in the past, you should note that there have been recent changes to the numbered reporting boxes. New boxes have been added and existing boxes were renumbered and/or retitled. If you do not use a software tool to help with 1099-PATR filing, be sure to look closely while filing to prevent mistakes.
This is another benefit of utilizing AMS software tools. We know that tax forms and codes change frequently, and our system is designed to address these shifts as soon as they happen. If the form you are working on looks different, it’s because we’ve identified the update and made the change. With us, you won’t have to constantly skim the IRS website looking for form updates.
