The 1099-MISC form is used to report a variety of miscellaneous income payments. When you win the state lotto or a big casino jackpot, this is the form you’ll receive. When you make certain types of payments to an attorney, or payments for fish as well as fishing boats, you use this form. There are exceptions, but for most types of miscellaneous income, the threshold is $600.

The good news is the form is pretty explicit about where to account for each type of income payment. Just note that the IRS’s general guidelines about payment types and the corresponding box on the form itself are not always the same. The link shows, for example, how non-employee compensation is the second listed income in the Form Instructions, even though it’s entered in Box 7 on the 1099-MISC form itself. Crop insurance proceeds is #6 on the Guidelines, but Box 10 on the form.
