Yes, you need a Transmitter Control Code (TCC) from the IRS when using E-File Direct. The process of receiving a TCC is simple, but it can take some time. We recommend obtaining your TCC soon after starting your business to prevent it from delaying your tax filing.
To obtain a Transmitter Control Code, you will need to file form 4419. This form is included on our Forms Filer Plus module and is very easy to fill out. Users will need to include the following information in order to get a TCC.
- Transmitter and/or Payer information – personal information, like name and mailing address
- Employer Identification Number
- Contact information
- The year electronic filing will begin
If you are using the form for an Original TCC request, you will be able to fill in the form at the IRS FIRE portal online. You can also mail or fax the form. Remember that obtaining a Transmitter Control Code is not something you can do in an afternoon. It often takes several days, even weeks, to get your TCC. Don’t put this off until mid-January, when you go to file your W2 and 1099 forms. Get this done early so you don’t stress about it later on.
Software Solutions for Electronic Filing
We’ve already mentioned that the Forms Filer Plus provides access to form 4419. However, if you’re planning to file online, you may also be interested in our electronic filing software solutions. Our E-File Software has two options: E-File Direct and E-File Services. E-File direct is a payroll system with a flat fee and an unlimited number of electronically filed forms. E-File Services partners with a third-party vendor and charges per form filed. This option allows users to customize their filing to more strictly adhere to their needs and budget.
Larger businesses tend to use E-File direct, while smaller businesses use E-File Services. If you have any questions about which will work best for you, talk to our Sales and Information team at 800-536-1099.
